"Gliding"Album Lyrics and Notes

Gliding
sweat on my forehead/ leaning back/pulling against the oars
spray in my face/ my neck is aching/I’m miles from the shore/oh I wanna go

gliding/skimming over the waves/gliding

where am I going/ how do I get there/waves slap the side of the boat
going in circles/ fighting the current/keeping myself afloat/oh I wanna go

gliding/skimming over the waves/gliding

then I remember/ take out the sail/raise it high

And now I am flying/over the water/troubles all melt away
I let the wind guide me/take a deep breath/
relax on this beautiful day/oh here I go

gliding/skimming over the waves/gliding

Further Down the Road
There's a red tailed hawk soaring high above/A canopy of green and gold
Leaves are trembling in the wind/The nights are getting cold
And those bright summer bouquets/Have dried up and blown away
They're gone

A little further down the road/A little further down the road
Around the bend and out of sight
A little further down the road

I woke up the other night/ I could feel your hand in mine
Could hear Kentucky singing’ in your voice/I could see your blue blue eyes
On that morning last July/I didn't know it was goodbye
That you'd be gone

A little further down the road…

Everybody’s gonna end up there/It’s a fate that we all share
And no body knows just where that road goes
And what will I see, will you be waiting there for me
When I go

a little further down the road…

Black Water
my wife she can't stop crying/thank god there's not a loaded gun in the house
my son says make a fresh start/he says it's time to sell and get out
but I got nowhere to go/this life is all I know
so I'll stay by this black water

At dusk I dropped a line/and caught myself a speckled trout
they say you shouldn't eat it/but I went ahead and fried it up
it's what we've always done/I've got nowhere to run
so I'll stay by this black water

black water, there's a sickly sheen/black water, it smells like gasoline
it used to sparkle in the sun/but those days are done

We've been here on this bayou/through floods and hurricanes and wars
and now it breaks my heart/every time I walk along the shore
but I got no where to go/I call this place my home
so I'll stay by this black water

Jungle Woman
There's a wild vine growing around my door/There's a sweet heavy scent in the air
The moon is rising and I know/That my jungle man, he’s out there

Like a tiger, baby, without a sound/I'm gonna sniff around and track you down
I'll swing on your vine like a chimpanzee/Until you give your love to me

Oh, oh, you know it's true/That I go ape for you
Jungle man, can't you see/You bring out the jungle woman in me

Like an elephant I won't forget/To scratch your itch, and better yet
Like a boa constrictor, baby, all night/I'm gonna wrap myself around you
And squeeze you tight

Oh, oh, you know it's true/That I go ape for you
Jungle man, can't you see/You bring out the jungle woman in me

String Of Pearls
A cold wind was blowing/Leaves were falling all around
A smile was on your face/Your hat it was pulled down
Leaning on two canes/You walked up the street
In your pocket was a velvet box/You handed it to me

A string of pearls/A string of pearls
Each one started out as a grain of sand
Held now by loving hands
Treasure from another world
A string of pearls

It seemed like everything was over/The day the fever came
With three little ones at home/They said you'd never walk again
Another man might have given up/But you never turned away
Each trial just made you stronger/And our love grew every day

A string of pearls…

Every challenge brings a choice/Turn and run, or stand and stay
Every day there is a chance/To grow in unexpected ways

The clock softly chimes/And the moments rise and fall
The past is smiling down on me/From faces on the wall
You’ve gone on ahead and I sit here/With the beads in my hand
Each one a precious memory/Connected in a strand

A string of pearls…

Angelitos – Little Angels
chalk lines on the sidewalk/little shoes in the hall
curtains flap in the wind/crayon pictures on the wall
up a flight of stairs/in San Luis de Potosi
a one eyed rabbit sits waiting

angelitos, angelitos/poco tiempo estuvieron
ya se fueron, ya se fueron/angelitos

literal translation
little angels, little angel/ here for just a little while
gone away, gone away/little angels

flowers and ave marias/candles flicker in the night
we all gather round/to say our goodbyes
little crosses sprout like lilies/just outside the town
bones of the inocentes

angelitos, angelitos…

and the beast in el norte/every day its hunger grows
cocaina, marijuana/through the hills and highways flow
and the traffic stops for nothing/not even angelitos

little angels, little angels/they came to laugh and play
gone away, gone away/little angels

angelitos, angelitos…

Traditional. I first heard this song about the beauty of nature at church in Albuquerque, New Mexico when I was a teenager. It originated in Spain and is widely known and loved throughout the Hispanic world. It is used as the unofficial anthem of the United Farm Workers movement.

The guitar begins to cry/Struggling against the dawn
It’s useless to try and stop it/Impossible not to go on
Crying like the water/The way the wind weeps over the fallen snow
Soft tones of sadness over distant things

Future One And Only
It's not that I am lost without you/I am not marooned in misery
I am not drifting through a blue bayou/Or shipwrecked out at sea
I'm not waiting to be rescued/I'm not drowning in despair
But in this tune there's room for two/And I've got a life to share

So whenever you appear
There’s a place for you right here/right here beside me
For my future one and only

Perhaps you’re taking in a movie/With a friend you’ve known since school
Has that couple to your side with a love they can’t hide/Got you wishin’ it would happen to you?
On those times you when you get lonely/Are you sending up a prayer
For someone to sing along with your song?/For a woman with a life to share?

So whenever you appear
There’s a place for you right here/right here beside me
For my future one and only

And I’ve got so much to share/Oh baby, when you make the scene
You’ll get a friend and lover/Beyond your wildest dreams
And we’ll make sweet music together/In our little hideaway
We’ll nestle and nuzzle, kiss and cuddle/Loving’ till the break of day

So whenever you appear
There’s a place for you right here
So don’t be long dear/This could be our year/The coast is so clear
For my future one and only

I Got Plenty
If you need strength, I got plenty/If you need a little tenderness, I got plenty
If you need understanding, I got plenty/Anything you need, I got plenty.

Now darling, what you worrying for/Don’t you know everything that I have is yours
You just open up and let me through/I will give it all, give it all to you

If you need faith, I got plenty/If you need peace of mind, I got plenty
If you need forgiveness, I got plenty/Anything you need, I got plenty

And you can believe it, these words are true/There is no end to what love can do
And till the end of time, till the world is through/I will give it all, give it all to you

If you need light, I got plenty/If you need joy, I got plenty
If you need some lovin’, I got plenty/Anything you need, I got plenty
Anything you need, I got plenty

Ship Of Safety
There is a ship that sails the sea/And travels safely through the deep
Through stormy waters to the shore/Of God's promise and peace

Built of surrender and of faith/It gives a bright and holy light
Illuminating all the shadows/And shining through the night

It carries all who wish to go/Who wish to journey to that shore
Through the silence and the peace/Into the Heart of our Lord

The prophets all have passed this way/They guide the ship and keep it safe
Setting the course straight and true/Sailing on through night and day

The ship draws near and nearer still/You can board it if you will
The water heaves, the wind does blow/The choice is yours, to stay or go

There is a ship that sails the sea/And travels safely through the deep
Through stormy waters to the shore/Of God's promise and peace
